The Director Merchandising Insights and Analytics provides strategic consulting to Ontario Banner Leads and Merchandising Vice-Presidents, with the objective of growing overall sales, market share, and customer performance. This person is responsible for integrating multiple sources of data into business strategies and processes, with a focus on merchandising and eCommerce teams. The Director leads a team of managers and advisors to deliver an annual strategic workplan, and demonstrates an ability to motivate, guide and mentor a high-performing team.


This role requires rich experience in advanced analytics; most notably transactional, loyalty, and market data analyses in application to Grocery category management. This person must 'connect the dots' between different sources of intelligence; bringing together internal and external data, as well as primary and secondary research sources to drive change within the business. The successful candidate will have strong critical thinking, and can condense complex analytical concepts into concise and actionable language. This person is known for building strong business relationships and their influence of senior executives.


Specific Responsibilities

  • Responsible for creation and execution of the annual Merchandising Analytics work plan based on strategic priorities established by Senior executives.  Create team vision and ownership in delivering against needs of different business areas.
  • Support the Senior Ontario Division Leaders on various business questions, preparing and presenting analysis and trends in preparation for Metro Inc. executive meetings.
  • Working closely with the Banner Leads, identify key categories based on strategic importance for the banners, and build a process to facilitate the application of insight and analytics to them.
  • Identify opportunities to engage CPGs as part of category reviews and other merchandising processes. Supervise the development of templates and guidelines provided to CPG's as part of these processes.
  • Provide analytical support to Banner Leads and Merchandising VPs in the development and the management of their pricing and promotional strategies (e.g. weekly flyer planning).
  • Lead the analytical support provided to the ecomm team (Qc & Ont. Divisions); providing insights and recommendations on key business decisions.
  • Manage the development and distribution of monthly customer KPI reports and dashboards across the business
  • Manage the day-to-day relationship with various Metro Inc. analytical partners and prioritize the elements of their work plan based on business needs.
  • Work closely with a team of dunnhumby scientists to share and prioritize business needs, and agree analytical methodologies utilized.
  • Closely collaborate with dunnhumby on the development and the enhancement of customer segmentations and language.
  • Develop and supervise the execution of integrated measurement plans on key cross-functional initiatives for both banners, leveraging all areas of expertise within the Customer Intelligence team.
  • Develop and supervise the execution of measurement plans specific to key in-store operational initiatives (ex: self-check-out, electronic self-tags, etc).
  • Maintain a strong internal governance structure, with regular communication and information sharing with teams across the business
  • Work closely with the other members of the Customer Intelligence Leadership Team (Qc & Ont.)
  • Responsible for supervising 3 managers and 4 advisors and creating a highly engaged team dynamic.

  • Bachelor Degree in Marketing, Finance, Economy, Mathematics or Management. Master's degree is a definite asset.
  • 10 to 15 years of experience in category/ brand management (CPG) or Data & Analytics Consultancy
  • Knowledgeable of the retail industry
  • Strong knowledge of data management tools (dunnhumby, Precima, etc) and market data (Nielsen)
  • Knowledgeable of merchandising processes and tools (Metro and/or other retailers)
  • Strong ability to analyze data from multiple sources, to derive insights and to provide strategic & actionable recommendations to senior audiences
  • Bilingualism is an asset (English/French)
  • Experience in people management
