Summary

The Manager of Health and Safety, Distribution Centres, will assist in maintaining and implementing the Company’s health and safety program to ensure safety excellence for our workers, vistors and contractors; protection from hazards, prevention of incidents, and compliance with OHS legislation. The ideal candidate will offer OHS expertise and recommendations and demonstrates excellent communication skills.

 

Specific Responsibilities

  • Provide 24 hours per day, seven days per week emergency response support to the organization in “emergency” situations. 
  • Develop, coordinate and maintain the Company’s health and safety policy, program, standards, procedures and safe work practices as required.
  • Direct the investigation of all “critical” incidents and accidents as required by the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Assist Operations by reviewing incident/accident investigations and providing additional prevention recommendations, where applicable.
  • Implement and facilitate any and all required health and safety training programs to meet or exceed the guidelines set forth by the applicable legislation, including the development and delivery of annual H&S Standards training.
  • Assist Operations with Ministry of Labour (MOL) inquiries, inspections, investigations, orders and compliance.
  • Conduct new equipment safety assessments prior to equipment being placed into service.
  • Implement education programs for Joint Health and Safety Committee Members and DC personnel on hazards, conditions etc. and the appropriate prevention techniques to reduce the frequency of WSIB Claims
  • Maintain an active and productive working relationship, designed to improve the safety of our employees, visitors and contractors.
  • Assist the Health & Safety Specialist with the development of new training programs.
  • Analyze, develop and assist operations with the implementation of  Safe Work Practices, techniques and/or programs to reduce accident trends.
  • Develop and present to the Director, Health & Safety all yearly budgetary and strategic planning documentation as requested by the Company.
  • Distribute to the Distribution Directors and Operations management any and all required documentation and updates, as set forth in the Health and Safety Legislation.
  • Review by period, frequency & severity, Ministry of Labour updates with Operation Directors during scheduled period Health & Safety meetings.
  • Distribute period end information, including accident trends to Vice President, Directors, Operation Managers and supervision.
  • Perform Health & Safety audits of all Distribution centres bi-annully. Review findings and recommendations with facility Directors.
  • Provide any necessary support to all Joint Health & Safety Committee members.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree
  • CRSP designation preferred
  • 5 – 7 years of relevant managerial experience in a unionized distribution centre environment
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation 
  • Comprehensive understanding of accident prevention fundamentals and safety management principles
  • Holds current First Aid/CPR certificate
  • Intermediate level knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook 
  • Strong interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills
