The Research and Planning practice is part of the Metro Inc. Customer Intelligence team. In collaboration with the Merchandising Insight and Analytics practice, it performs in-depth market & customer research/analysis, with the objective of providing relevant insight to inform business decisions. The Research and Planning group works closely with various departments within the organization (ex: merchandising, marketing, operations, loyalty, etc). The Research and Planning Manager is responsible to delivering insights to all banners of the Metro Ontario division.



Competitive Intelligence

  • Review, organize and disseminate market, grocery and retail trends to the organization (Ontario, Canadian and Global trends). Share findings, in a timely manner, with other members of the team located in Montreal and Toronto.                
  • Identify and communicate regularly to the business opportunities and threats derived from trends.                
  • Work with various business partners / sources to ensure proper understanding of key market & consumer trends (ex: ACNielsen).                
  • Prepare and present quarterly insight reviews to the Ontario senior management team.                 
  • Actively participate to the annual strategic planning process by providing relevant insights to the organization.

Primary Research                

  • Work closely with various departments to identify primary research needs as part of the annual strategic planning process.                 
  • Document the primary research needs for each banner, ensure the alignment of the needs with strategic priorities and determine the right methodology to achieve the objectives defined by the internal clients.                
  • In collaboration with external partners (ex: research firms), define and execute the annual primary research work plan. Ensure the quality of the deliverables prior to sharing them with the internal clients.                
  • In collaboration with external partners (when relevant), present key research findings to the relevant internal stakeholders.


Performance Evaluation                

  • Work with business partners (ex: ACNielsen, Environics) to understand and manage on-going business performance and competitive tracking. Make recommendations based on insights.                
  • Assess business performance of marketing and merchandising initiatives, activations, and sponsorships, when necessary.                
  • Support the optimization of advertising, marketing, communication plans and execution through primary and secondary market research.

Customer Satisfaction Survey               

  • Supervise the development and execution on the annual customer engagement plan to maximize participation to the customer satisfaction survey (all banners).          
  • Define annual engagement and communication plans to maximize the use of the customer satisfaction platform and reports by various internal stakeholders.  


  • Build and manage the annual Ontario research work plan and budget. Provide variance explanations on a quarterly basis.                
  • In collaboration with the Quebec Research and Planning Manager, develop and grow a strong research suppliers network to be used by both divisions.   
  • Actively participate to the professional growth of their employee(s).                
  • Ensure best practices sharing with the balance of team located in Montreal on a regular basis (ex: research findings, trends, tools, etc).



  • University Degree (BA with applied experience in market/consumer research)              
  • Masters Degree in market research, an asset                  
  • 7-10 years of experience in market research (experience in CPG, retail, grocery retail is an asset), especially in the Ontario market             
  • Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to translate data into actionable insight          
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills : capable of communicating insights to all levels of the organization (both orally and in writing)
  • Be a critical and creative thinker. Have the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently            
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite                
  • Travel required (occasionally)
  • Bilingualism, an asset (English & French)
